Lately, I have been really stressed with finals for summer term coming up, packing up and moving to a new house, and trying to plan for a trip to Burma I’m taking in the next week. Honestly, most of the time all I want to do is stick a spoon in a pint of ice cream and never take it out while re-watching gossip girl and forget all the tasks at hand. Right now I need to step away from the pint and the rest of my fridge…cause that’s how I feel right now and need to plug in my little pink salt lamp and get working.
I’ve had my salt lamp for a while now and I love it. I love it for the aesthetic and for all of the benefits that it has. I turn it on when I am stressed and just need to have something to help me feel relaxed and mellow out a little bit.
Basically a Himalayan salt lamp when heated releases negative ions into the air. Often times there is an imbalance of positive and negative ions in the air due to the excess of positive ions dispersed from microwaves, TVs, computers, cell phones and other electronics. This excess can cause insomnia, fatigue, and elevated stress levels (booo) ultimately stemming from a lack of oxygen to the brain.
When turning on a salt lamp you are cleaning the air (which is why it is also beneficial for people with allergies), circulating oxygen to your brain, elevating your mental alertness and alleviating drowsiness. I found this amazing info from Wellness Mama who has her own post about salt lamps and their benefits.
I also personally find the soothing pink glow very calming and a conversation starter among guests which I love.
Mine has an aromatherapy defuser attached to it so I can put in any essential oils that I need at the moment while the lamp is on. Right now I am really loving earthy scents like pine, sage and cedar wood but I also really enjoy lavender. I will do a post on essential oils and their benefits later but right now I have to get back to reading my book for my Culture Health and Healing class so that I can turn in my paper for it tomorrow…
See yah! and if you have any ways to de-stress while also getting a ton of shit done please let me know.
